Gascon

A tough breed from the Pyrenean foothills

This tough breed originated in the Pyrenees and their foothills of Gascony, France, with their harsh climate and low-quality forage. As a result the animals are exceptionally hardy, very efficient at converting food and possess strong hooves developed over years of ranging in the mountains. The Gascon also has a strong resistance to heat, as well as black-rimmed eyelids that protect its eyes from bright mountain light. It grows a thick winter coat that – although short – has good water-repellant characteristics.

The cows calve easily without assistance, and the calves can gain an impressive 1 kg (2¼ lb) a day without supplementary feeding. They are a reddish colour at birth and do not get their grey coats until around four months of age. The bulls are also grey, but have black shading below the neck and stomach.
